nomothetic and ideographic Flashcards

1
Q

strength: has been applied to help large populations.

A

E:Nomothetic researchers establish general laws, which can be applied to understand, explain and predict the behaviour of many people.
E:This makes nomothetic research ideally suited to developing interventions and treatments that can help many people, rather than just specific individuals. For example, CBT was developed as a treatment for depression because of the general laws established about the ways in which irrational thoughts cause depressive thinking.
L:Therefore, the nomothetic approach has the advantage of offering general laws that can help many.

Q

strength:, the ideographic and nomothetic approaches can be viewed as complementary rather than in conflict.

A

E:Shallice and Warrington used the idiographic approach when they examined the case study of Patient KF.in this study.t KF’s acoustic short-term memory was significantly more impaired than his visual short term was.this was used to challenge the multistore model.
E:- This shows how analysis of a single case study can be used to help understand the general laws governing memory (a nomothetic aim). Although ideographic research cannot in itself help develop a general law, it can be used to critique general laws that have been developed through nomothetic research.
L:therefore using the approaches together can be more effective than only using one approach.
