gender bias Flashcards

Q

limitation:Beta bias can be socially harmful.

A

E:– For example, some have argued that women are less likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia because tools for diagnosing them were designed with men in mind.
E: By only considering men when designing tools to diagnose schizophrenia, researchers have been guilty of beta bias. This can harm women as it could lead to women not being diagnosed with schizophrenia and therefore going without needed treatment.

Q

limitation:Androcentrism may be a widespread problem within psychology.

A

E: Androcentrism can be found at various stages within the research process e.g., when designing research and when interpreting the findings.
E:On the one hand, this suggests that addressing androcentrism (the roots cause of gender bias) may be difficult. On the other, it suggests there are lots of opportunities for making a positive change.

Q

One way to challenge androcentrism and gender bias is to use the feminist psychological approach.

A

E :A central assumption of feminist psychology is that biology plays, at most, a minimal role in determining differences between the genders. Feminist psychologists argue most gender differences are the result of stereotyping.

E: This approach challenges the theoretical basis for androcentrism. It does so by arguing that since both male and female behaviour are often the results of stereotypes, male behaviour shouldn’t be considered the “norm”, as it’s every bit as artificial as female behaviour.
