What is a grammatical case?

A case is a grammatical category that refers to inflections which make it clear exactly what function a given word fulfills in a given sentence. These inflections may be applied to nouns, pronouns, adjectives and numerals. Words are transformed into a given case by either adding a suffix or by changing entirely (as is the case with most personal pronouns).

What is the nominative case?

The nominative case indicates that a word is the subject of a sentence. The word does not change in the nominative case in Slovak.
Example - I am young.
In this sentence “I” is the subject. Often this case is used with the verb “to be”.
Sometimes both parts of the sentence refer to the subject so both are in the nominative case.
Example - He is a pilot.
In this sentence “he” is the subject, but since “he” is also the “pilot” they are both in the nominative case.
