Nomenclature Part 3: Naming Ionic Compounds and Acids Flashcards
What are the three criteria for an ionic compound?
it has both a mental and a nonmetal, it has a charge, and it has a recognizable ion
Two steps to name the ionic compound:
name the cation first (drop “ion” if it is there), then name the anion
NaCl
Sodium chloride
Na2SO4
sodium sulfate
Fe2S3
iron (III) sulfide
CuNO3
copper (I) nitrate
Aluminum phosphate
AlPO4
Aluminum sulfide
Al2S3
Aluminum sulfate
Al2(SO4)3
Copper (II) chloride
CuCl2
Chromium (III) oxide
Cr2O3
Chromium (IV) hypobromite
Cr(BrO)4
What are acids formed from?
acids are formed from anions with one or more H+ ion
How would you name an acid with a monatomic anion (-ide)?
the prefix “hydro-“ is placed at the beginning of the name and the -ide ending is replaced with “-ic acid”
How would you name an acid with a polyatomic anion (-ate)?
the -ate ending is replaced with “-ic acid”
How would you name an acid with a polyatomic anion (-ite)?
the -ite ending is replaced with “-ous acid”
HCl
hydrochloric acid
HNO3
nitric acid
HNO2
nitrous acid
MnO4^- + H
HMnO4 permanganic acid
PO3^3- + H3
H3PO3 phosphorous acid
H3PO4
phosphoric acid
SCN^-
thiocyanate
