Nomenclature of Compounds Flashcards
Is a scientific way of naming compounds. Compounds are named according to the elements that compose them. Naming compounds is based on the number of atoms used per element and the kind of bond that is formed.
Nomenclature
- Came from the Latin word “heap” or “pile”.
- Has a value of 6.02 x 1023 , known as Avogadro’s number.
- Used to count atoms, molecules, ions and other elementary particles.
Mole
It also means ATOMIC WEIGHT. Is the mass of one atom of an element and is expressed in atomic mass unit (amu).
Atomic Mass
Is the mass of one mole of an element or a compound expressed in grams per mole (g/mol).
Molar Mass
Is the mass of 1 molecule of a covalent compound the sum of the atomic masses of its constituent atom.
Molecular Mass
Is the mass of 1 molecule of an ionic compound the sum of the atomic masses of its constituent atom.
Formula Mass
- Using formula mass, the percent composition of each element of a compound can be obtained. The percent composition can tell how abundant the element is in the compound.
- According to the Law of Definite Proportion, also called the Law of Constant Composition, The elements in a compound are present in a definite proportion by mass. Therefore, said composition of the elements determines the identity of the compound. The composition of the compound is commonly expressed as the percent by mass of the elements.
