Nomenclature Flashcards
Rule 1: parent chain
Find longest parent carbon chain
–if there is a tie, the one with the most substituents is the parent chain
Rule 2: numbering
The terminal carbon closest to a substituent is numbered #1
-if there is a tie, look at the second substituent
Rule 3: alphabetizing and numbering substituents
Order the substituents alphabetically and give each one a number to match the carbon to which it is attached
Rule 4: prefixes (when and why they are necessary)
If more than one of the same substituent is present, use the prefixes di, tri, tetra, etc
–e.g., 2,2-dimethylbutane
Rule 5: when to use hyphens
Hyphens are places before and after substituent numbers, but not between standard prefixes
Rule 6: alphabetizing
- -Do NOT consider the prefix when alphabetizing the substituents if:
- -DO alphabetize if:
- it represents a number (di-, tri-, etc.)
- it includes a hyphen (sex-, tert-, etc.)
- alphabetize other prefixes, like isopropyl, isobutyl, etc.
