Q

What were attainders used for?

A

They were used to seize titles and possessions from those Henry suspected of being disloyal - it allowed someone to be declared guilty of treason without the need for a trial. First attainders were issued against men who had opposed Henry at Bosworth but they were eventually used periodically throughout his reign, and Henry often prepared to reverse an attainder if he though it would secure loyalty, and Thomas Howard had lands attained and was imprisoned
