Nml Flashcards
Proportionalism (Hoose)
“It is never right to go against a principle unless there is a proportionate reason which would justify it”-Hoose
Doctrine of double effect(Aquinas)
“Nothing hinders one act from having two effects, only one of which is intended”-Aquinas

-precepts commonly accepted by everyone
- clear cut and straightforward
-dode allows for flexibility
-shows some actions are intrinsically evil
NML weakness
-following precepts can lead to immoral outcomes

-outdated in todays world.
Strengths of proportionalism
-allows a more compassionate stance and takes into account modern issues
- proportionalist approach allows individuals to be autonomous
-it is flexible and recognises that natural laws must change in accordance w individual circumstance
Aristotle
-Aquainas was inspired by Aristotle
-Aristotle believes everything has a telos
-telos meaning end or purpose
-the telos of a human is to reach eudaimonia (happiness, fulfilment)
Stoicism
-aquainas inspired by stoics
-stoicism viewed the world as an ordered place arranged by nature
-believed we had a divine spark that enabled us to reason and understand the universe.
-Believed the path to human happiness and leading a good life was to accept the nature order of things and live according to nature rules
Impact of ancient influences on Aquinas
Telos-The idea that humans have a purpose or end. They should strive to fulfil it.
Reason- the world is ordered and rational; we have the capacity given by God to understand it. We should use right reason.
Nature- we have human nature and it is important to do what is natural
Aquainas and happiness
-our telos on earth is human flourishing. You follow the precepts to help reach it.
-only fully achieved after death. Beatific vision-the eternal and direct visual perception of God
Aquainas happiness quote
“Full happiness does not reside in wealth or glory or honour, or in knowledge of virtue, or in any created reality, but in the loving vision of God”
Synderesis
-inborn knowledge of the primary principle for moral action
-it is the inner principle directing people towards good and away from evil
-All other moral rules are taken from this
