NLP Flashcards
What are the three main representational systems?
Sight, Sound, Physical Touch or smells
What do submodalities refer to?
Submodalities refer to the sensory components of experience, such as qualities within visuals, sounds, and feelings.
What does anchoring involve?
Anchoring involves conditioning responses to specific triggers, linking a specific stimulus with a specific emotional or mental state.
What is rapport building?
Rapport building is the process of establishing effective communication and creating a sense of trust and connection with others.
What is outcome setting?
Outcome setting is the process of clarifying goals and defining specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound objectives.
Vague suggestion
You might begin to notice that as you relax, your mind starts to become more open to new possibilities.
Example: “You might begin to notice that, as you sit in this meeting, ideas naturally come to you effortlessly.”
Explanation: A vague suggestion often uses language that is indirect and open-ended. The key here is the use of phrases like “might begin to notice” and “naturally come to you,” which leave room for interpretation and do not make direct commands.
Another example:
“You might start to see that, as we work together on this project, new innovative solutions will naturally emerge.”
Storytelling
Imagine a time when you were really confident, a time when you felt unstoppable. What was happening back then? How did it feel to have that unshakeable confidence?
Example: “A friend of mine once faced a huge challenge at work. He felt overwhelmed and unsure, but then he remembered a time when he successfully led a difficult project. Drawing on that confidence, he tackled the new challenge head-on and achieved great success.”
Explanation: Storytelling involves recounting a narrative or scenario to engage the listener’s imagination and emotions. This technique is used to influence by creating a relatable or inspirational context. In this case, the story about the friend’s past experience leads the listener to draw parallels with their own situation and gain motivation.
Another example:
“I remember a time when we faced a similar challenge last year. Initially, it seemed daunting, but our team came together, leveraging each person’s strengths. By the end, we delivered an outstanding result, and that experience taught us just how capable we are when we collaborate effectively.”
Embedded commands
As you relax your body and take a deep breath, you can begin to realize just how capable you truly are.
Example: “As you listen to this presentation and focus on the key points, you can start to understand how valuable this information will be for your next project.”
Explanation: Embedded commands are instructions hidden within a sentence. They are embedded in a way that, when delivered with appropriate tonality and emphasis, can direct the subconscious mind. Here, “listen to this presentation,” “focus on the key points,” and “start to understand” are commands embedded within a broader sentence.
Another example:
“As you gather your materials and carefully review the project requirements, you can find yourself feeling more prepared and confident.”
Presuppositions
When you look back in a few months, you’ll find yourself amazed at how much progress you’ve made.
Example: “When you complete this training, you will feel a sense of accomplishment and be ready to apply your new skills in exciting projects.”
Explanation: Presuppositions are assumptions embedded in a statement that are accepted as true without question. In this example, the statement assumes the listener will complete the training and feel accomplished, thereby implying success and readiness for future projects.
Another example:
“When we finish this project successfully, you will not only feel proud of your achievements but also be ready to take on even bigger challenges.”
Pacing and leading
People often find that as they continue to practice, their skills naturally improve. And when you think about it, the more you practice, the more natural it becomes for you.
