There were several issues around his care, his human rights, capacity, DOLs, his relationship with his partner which was volatile and abusive alongside protecting the safety of staff and other patients. As a multi-disciplinary team we had several discussions on how to approach this case, I worked closely with the team and contributed to risk assessments and MDT discussions about mitigating risks and advocating for the patient to ensure that he wasn’t being treated differently than any other patient and that his human rights were being upheld.
- How do you ensure patient independence, well-being, choice, and control while providing social work support?

- Can you discuss a time when you had to advocate for a patient or family member within the healthcare system?
Currently working with a patient who had been allegedly discharged from her oncologist for refusing chemo intervention. This led to the patient not receiving the results of her MRI which confirmed that her disease had progressed significantly. This then led to a mistrust from medical professionals. I worked closely with the MC team to ensure that she was seen by the oncology team, that she was referred to the community palliative care team and that her questions were answered and that care was provided. Although she did not wish to engage in the end due to the mistrust we were able to offer it, should she wish to engage at a later time. I also discussed raising official complaints in order to ensure that she felt a sense of agency.
