In my experience, building rapport and trust with clients begins with active listening and empathy. I strive to create a safe and non-judgmental space where clients feel comfortable sharing their experiences and concerns. I also believe in being transparent about the social work process and ensuring clients understand their rights and the services available to them.

When faced with ethical dilemmas, I always refer back to the BASW Code of Ethics and consult with supervisors or colleagues as needed. I prioritize the best interests of my clients while also considering relevant laws and regulations. Open communication and collaboration with stakeholders are key to resolving conflicts of interest effectively.

A

I think that is important to acknowledge the small, daily wins that happen when you have a caseload such as a person saying that they feel listened to or supported. When you achieve a goal such as someone wanting to be discharged home.

***V – I have been working with a client for several months who was very sceptical of the medical system and was interested in complimentary/alternative approaches. Firstly I helped her with her benefits and then there were various things that I researched and referred her to including hydro baric chambers, trauma counselling, music recording.

A

Prioritizing my caseload involves assessing clients’ needs, risks, and urgency of intervention. I use tools like the ABCD prioritization framework to categorize cases based on their impact and level of crisis. Regular reviews and consultations with supervisors help ensure I allocate my time and resources effectively.
Recently I have been managing two caseloads within two different organisations whilst one organisation was undergoing major transformations and periods of uncertainty.

Collaboration is central to social work practice. I frequently collaborate with healthcare professionals, educators, law enforcement, and community organizations to address clients’ multidimensional needs. By pooling our expertise and resources, we can provide more comprehensive support to clients and maximize positive outcomes.

I utilize a strengths-based approach, focusing on clients’ coping skills and support networks. Whether it’s connecting clients with crisis hotlines, arranging emergency housing, or providing emotional support, I prioritize client safety and empowerment.
Case where a man who had been diagnosed two weeks ago came into hospice and died 2 hours later. He had only told two people, his daughter and his partner who did not get on. They were shocked and distressed, I spent about 2-3 hours sitting with them and supporting them during this time, ensuring that they had support systems in place and with arranging the next steps.

A

Self-care is essential for maintaining resilience in social work. I practice mindfulness, engage in regular physical activity, and seek supervision and peer support. Setting boundaries, taking breaks, and pursuing hobbies outside of work help me recharge and prevent burnout, allowing me to continue serving clients effectively.
