nitrogen metabolism Flashcards
role of aminopeptides and carboxypeptidase in the small intestine ?
reduce peptides into amino acids
do dietary proteins last ?
some last some dont
do we need to replace dietary proteins
no ( all proteins are turned over)
how many amino acids does the body contain?
20 amino acids
how many amino acids in the body are non-essential (can be synthesised) and essential
11 are non essential and 9 are essential
what does non essential & essential amino acids mean?
non essential -can be synthesised in the
body
essential- they need to be in the diet
which type of protein contain all essential amino acids - plant or animal?
no, only animal protein contain ALL essential amino acids whereas plant protein lacks some.
what does the amino acid phenylalanine convert into?
phenylalaine converts tyrosine
PKU (phenylketonuria) is caused by deficiency of what enzyme, and what does this prevent being produced?
A deficieny in phenyalanine hydroxylase so the amino acid phenyalaine cant be converted in tyrosine
what is PKU
it is irreversible brain damage when
phenyalanine converts to phenylketones and not tyrosine
how can PKU be treated if detected early ?
supplementing low protein diet with tyrosine
(dietary alternations)
what is the most common urea cycle disorder?
OTC
what is the role of the urea cycle?
to convert toxic ammonia into urea which can then be excreted through the urine
what brings about a urea cycle disorder?
hyperammoniaemia (high ammonia in the blood)
give an example of where a urea cycle disorder is mostly present in?
neonatal period
