Nitrogen cycle Flashcards
Why do we need nitrogen?
Because nitrogen are in proteins and we need proteins to grow.
How do animals gain nitrogen?
By consuming plants.
how do plants gain nitrogen?
By absorbing nitrates from the soil.
How do plants gain nitrates so they can make proteins?
Lightning and nitrogen-fixing bacteria in roots and soil.
What is the role of decomposers?
They break down proteins in dead animals and plants and turn them into ammonia. Ammonia is then turned into nitrates by nitrifying bacteria in the soil.
what is the role of nitrifying-bacteria?
To turn ammonia in decaying matter into nitrates.(nitrification)
What is the role of nitrifying- fixing bacteria
To turn normal nitrogen into compounds that plants can use.
What is the role of denitrifying bacteria?
To turn nitrates back in to atmospheric nitrogen. This is no benefit to anyone.
