Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
Nitrogen into organic compounds
Through assimilation and feeding
Decomposition
Produces ammonia from nitrogen, proteins, DNA and vitamins
Nitrification
Ammonia oxidised into nitrite then nitrate by nitrifying bacteria
Plant Roots
Absorb Nitrates combine with carbs making amino acids as well as other nitrogen compounds
Denitrifying bacteria
Use Nitrates an energy source convert to N gas. Reducing amount in soil
Free living nitrogen-fixing bacteria
Soil, nitrogen-ammonia used by bacteria to make amino acid/protein. When dead protein decomposes. Ammonia back to soil
Nitrogen fixing bacteria in root nodules
Ammonia converted into amino acids and nitrogen compound. Decomposition returns ammonia to soil.
Sulphur dioxide
Wears buildings
Harmful to plants.
