Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
Saprobiotic nutrition
Saprobionts are bacteria that feed on dead organic matter. They carry out extra cellular digestion by sectretinh enzymes onto matter than absorbing the products of digestion.
Mycorrhizae
These are relationships between fungi and plant roots. Fungi are made of hyphae are long thin strands which connect to the plants roots
Adapttatoins Mycorrhizae
Increases SA of the plant root for absorption of ions such as phosphates and nitrates and water. In addition the mycorrhizae acts as a sponge so holds water and minerals around the roots. In return the fungi obtain glucose from the plant. This is a symbiotic relationship (both organisms benefit)
Effects of soil denitrification
NB denitrification occurs in anaerobic conditions eg waterlogged soil
Importance of nitrogen cycle
Microorganisms are needed to convert nitrogen gas into nitrogen containing substances that plants and animals can absorb
Key processes of nitrogen cycle
-Saprobiotic nutrition and microbes
-Ammonification
-Nitrification
-Nitrogen fixation
-Denitrification
