Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
Nitrogen Fixation
A
When Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria take the nitrogen gas from the atmosphere and turn it in to ammonia. An example of a nitrogen fixing bacteria is Rhizobium. These are located in noduels(on the plant).
2
Q
Assimilation
A
When Ammonia or Nitrates get absorbed by plants to create molecules such as DNA.
3
Q
Nitrification
A
When Ammonia gets turned into Nitrates. This proccess is done by nitrifying bacteria such as Nitrobactor. They turn ammonia into nitrites then into nitrates.
3
Q
Ammonification
A
When Ammonia returns to the soil by deceased organisms.
3
Q
Denitrifiation
A
When denitrifying bacteria convert nitrates into nitrogen gas
