Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
What is Ammonification?
Nitrogen present in the soil is decomposed by fungi and bacteria and released as ammonium NH4+.
What bacteria is responsible for nitrification? (Monster trucks)
Nitrosomonas.
Nitrobacter
Explain Denitrification.
Waterlogged soil, N2 gas is used up by bacteria in water - uses up oxygen to do this.
4 different types of Nitrogen from least usable to most usable.
N.
NO2.
NH4+.
NO3-.
Precipitation.
Air 78% N, rain contains N.
Explain Leaching.
Loss of nutrients from the soil. Occurs more likely in higher rainfall areas.
Nitrogen fixation.
Nitrogen gas made available to living organisms by being converted to ammonia by blue green algae/bacteria. Clostridium (free), or rhizobium (symbiotic).
