Q

nitrogen fixation

A

nitrogen fixation is when the nitrogen gas in the atmosphere is converted into nitrogen containing compounds. biological nitrification occurs by a bacteria called rhizobium.
rhizobium are found inside root nodules in leguminous plants.
they form a mutualistic relationship as they provide nitrogen and gains carbohydrates.

Q

ammonification

A

ammonification is when the nitrogen compounds in dead organisms is converted into ammonia by saprobionts which later forms ammonium ions.
also urine contains nitrogen compounds in which the urea is broken down by the saprobionts to form ammonia and then ammonium compounds.

Q

nitrification

A

nitrification is when the ammonium compounds in the soil is converted into nitrogen compounds that can be used by plants i.e, nitrates.
nitrosomonas chznges ammonium ions into nitrites.
nitrobacter converts nitrites into nitrates.

Q

denitrification

A

nitrates in the soil are converted back into nitrogen gas by denitrifying bacteria.
happens under anaerobic conditions 9 no oxygen); in waterlogged soils.
