nitrogen cycle Flashcards
nitrogen fixation
nitrogen-fixing bacteria converts nitrogen gas into ammonia which is used to make proteins
when the bacteria dies the protein decomposes and releases ammonia back into the soil
decomposition
decomposing Bacteria/fungi break down protein found in dead plants and animals, urine and faeces into ammonia that is released into the soil.
nitrification
ammonia is converted into nitrites, then nitrites are converted into nitrates using nitrifying bacteria
denitrification
denitrifying bacteria converts some nitrates into nitrogen
nitrogen-fixing bacteria
can be found in the soil or in roots nodules found on the roots of legumes and within the root nodules the bacteria gain carbohydrates from the plant and the plant gains a source of nitrates in return. this is a mutualistic relationship.
