definitions Flashcards
independent variable
thing you’re purposely changing, goes on horizontal axis of a graph
dependent variable
thing you’re measuring, goes on vertical axis of a graph
producers
organisms that make their own food (e.g. photosynthesising plants)
consumers
organisms that eat other living things (e.g. animals)
decomposers
organisms that secrete digestive enzymes to breakdown dead organic matter to obtain their food to help recycle nutrients a
physical environment
all the non-living (abiotic) factors which affect growth and survival of living things. (e.g. temperature, carbon dioxide concentration, minerals in soil, etc.)
population (ecology)
the total amount of individuals of one species in a particular habitat at a particular time
pyramids of number
shows number of each organism of each species in an ecosystem (not uniform shape)
pyramids of biomass
shows total mass of the organisms of the species in each trophic level (mass of individual organism x amount of organisms), uniform shape
pyramids of energy
shows total energy available in each trophic level per square metre per year, the amount of energy should decrease between each trophic level
