Nitrogen and Sulfur Flashcards

1
Q

Nitrogen is a diatomic molecule

Explain it’s configuration

A
Nitrogen’s atoms need to gain three electrons to achieve the noble gas configuration of neon
It does this by forming a triple covalent bond
The N(triple bond)N is nearly six times as strong as the N-N bond making it extremely hard to break and making N2 extreme unreactive

Q

Sulfur dioxide

A

Main cause of acid rain
Oxides of nitrogen catalyse the oxidation of sulfur suicide to sulfur trioxide which then reacts with water to form sulfuric acid which is the main cause of acid rain

Q

Sulfur dioxide formation

A

When we burn fossil fuels that contain sulfur impurities

When the fossil fuels are burnt the sulfur impurities get oxidised
