Nineteen Eighty-Four: Part II Flashcards
Part II of the Novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
What was written on the scrap piece of paper Julia gave to Winston in the halls?
‘I love you’.
What difficulty antagonized Winston after receiving the note?
He faced intense fear and Paranoia because he believed she was a member of the TP in a sting operation. It prevented him from thinking straight throughout most of his work day.
What demonstration allows Winston and Julia to meet in Victory Square?
There’s a convoy of captured Eurasian soldiers entering the city. Because of the large gathering, they are able to meet.
As they held hands, Winston ended up staring into the eyes of a captured soldier which is subtle foreshadowing as to what Winston will eventually endure.
What is Winston’s overriding feelings when he’s with Julia for the first few moments?
Winston is very scared as well as insecure about his physical traits. Julia responds to his fears by stating she’s “bad to the bone”, and essentially she doesn’t care about his physical traits.
What fascinates Winston about the Thrush singing in the tree next to them?
He wondered why it was singing alone to itself. It’s significant because it shows that the bird was doing it for himself as opposed to doing it for anyone else (much like what Winston and Julia are doing at that moment).
“If you kept the small rules, you could break the big ones”.
This meant that if you kept all the small rules that people tend to keep an eye out for, you could potentially break the bigger rules without fear of consequence.
What is Julia like?
She is naive, sensual and rebellious.
Naive: She doesn’t really care much about what the party will do to her.
Sensual: She uses her sexuality as a weapon against the party.
Rebellious: It’s evident that she is quite outspoken against the Party.
What does Julia reveal about the Party’s motives in trying to eradicate sex?
When you do the deed, you use energy. The deed is fun so why should you work for the party when you can be happy by yourself.
Essentially you can be taking that same effort and applying it to work.
What does Winston wish he did to Katharine when they were lost?
Shove her off a cliff. Because if he did they wouldn’t be marries which meant he could marry Julia.
What does Julia not understand in Winston’s mind?
She doesn’t understand why Winston wants to overthrow the party. Julia wants to rebel but for a very vague reason while Winston wants to do it in the argument of Objective truth and the likes.
What had Winston done that was ‘conscious, suicidal folly’?
He rented the room above Charrington’s shop for the sole purpose of railing Julia.
What strikes Winston about fat prole lady?
She was singing for the purpose of pleasing herself, much like the Thrush in those tree branches.
What is the symbolism of the glass paperweight?
The coral is Julia and the glass is Winston. The glass is a metaphor of the fragile nature of their affair.
Who vanished?
Syme got deleted.
What poster appeared in prep. for Hate Week?
Picture of a big angry Eurasian man with a machine gun.
The purpose of this is to instill fear into the population. Fear explodes into hatred and hatred explodes into Violence.
