How does economic growth affect the environment?
urban growth - more emissions into the environment, squatter settlements are common, waste disposal has been a major issue, traffic congestion is a major problem
Industrial growth - in Lagos harmful pollutants go down open drains ruining ecosystems
70% of forests have been destroyed by logging
Mining and oil extraction - oil spills have lead to a destruction in ecosystems, leading to a loss of biodiversity. Oil spills also cause fires which release harmful pollutants in the air - contributing to global warming
Eg the Bodo oil spills - shell agreed to pay 55 mill fo compensation of these 2 oil spills that occurred. This helped with the development of schools
