Newtons Laws and equilibrium Flashcards
What is the 1st law (Newtons)
Every body is in a state of rest or moving with a constant velocity except when changed by a force. (this is a restatement of law of inertia by Galileo)
T or F If the net force on a body is zero, its velocity will not change.
True - this is the basis of Newton’s law
T of F An unbalanced force on a body will always impact an object’s speed
F - It will always impact an objects velocity because velocity is a vector Think of a planet, it’s speed will not change in orbit, but its speed will be constant.
T or F The reason why initially moving objects tend to come to rest in our everyday life is because they are being acted on by unbalanced forces.
T-
T or F An unbalanced force will always change the object’s direction.
F - It will not always. If the unbalanced force is in the direction
What is Newton’s second law of motion
F=ma (force is a vector, acceloration is a vector)
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of stuff, (mostly). Weight is how much something is pulled by the force of gravity.
What are the base units of F in metirc?
Kg*m/s^2
T or F An object in motion will slow down unless it is acted on by an unbalanced force in the direction of motion.
F.
T or F An object in motion will maintain its speed and direction forever unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
T
An object will stay at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
T
An object acted on by an unbalanced force will always accelerate in the direction of the unbalanced force.
T
Newton’s 3rd law
For every action their is an equal and opposite reaction.
How to find the center of mass?
1) If the object is homogenous/ uniform density, it is the same as the geometric center, 2) If the object is not homogenous,
What is torque?
F*Distance. (Although its units are in Nm it is not work! ) You can have either with a force applied away from the center of mass or away from it’s pivot point.
