Amino Acids and Protiens Flashcards
What is central dogma
: a theory in genetics and molecular biology subject to several exceptions that genetic information is coded in self-replicating DNA and undergoes unidirectional transfer to messenger RNAs in transcription which act as templates for protein synthesis in translation (Watson and Crick) plus franklin
What type of acids are in DNA/ RNA
Nucleic acids
what type of acids are in protien
amino acids
What exceptiontions are there to the central dogma
HIV is a retro virus that does reverse transcription. There are also RNA viruses like SARS, Flu noncoding RNA, (ncRNA) does not perform translation, skips directly into action, thru Transfer RNA and ribosomal RNA. Used for translation into messenger RNA.
What is epigenetics ?
heritble changes not caused by changes in DNA sequences. same DNA sequence can be modified thru DNA methylation and histone modifications
what is aPeptide bond?
amid formed between two amino acids.
How are protiens made?
How are polypeptide linded together?
By linking polypeptides together.
by peptide bonds
Draw the structure of an amino acic and how they bond
How are peptide bonds stablized?
Throuh resonance stabilization
Short hand for amino acid
How are peptide bonds broken
Hydrolosys
1) Thru strong acids: Acid hydrolisis - non specific cleavage - no one knows where the cleavage will take place
2) Proteolysis cleavage - specific cleavage. ie tripsin cleaves C terminal side of Arg and :Lys
What is Histidine?
Draw the structure
Histidine is an amino acid. Blue is the backbone and the black is the side chain. it is special because it has a -pka of aprox 6.5. This is cool because it is approximatly the same pH as your body, (physiological pH) It can exist in a protinated and deprotonated areas
