Newtons laws Flashcards
Define gravitational force( Fg)
The force the earth exerts on any object on or near the earth
Define Normal force ( Fn)
The perpendicular force exerted by a surface on an object in contact with it
Define frictional force ( Ff)
The force that opposes the motion of an object and acts parallel to the surface with which the object is in contact
Distinguish between static and kinetic friction forces
- Static frictional force: the force that opposes the tendency of motion of a stationery object relative to a surface
- kinetic frictional force: the force that opposes the motion of a moving object relative to a surface with which it is in contact with
Define Newton’s 1 law.
A body will remain in it’s state of rest or uniform velocity unless acted upon by a net or resultant force.
What is newtons 1 law also know as?
The law of inertia
Define inertia
The property of an object that causes it to resist a change in its state of rest or uniform motion
Discuss using newtons law why it is important to wear seatbelts
We should wear seatbelts in order to prevent us from going in the same speed and direction that the car would go in if we were to experience a car crash
Define newtons 2nd law
When a net force is applied to an object of mass, it accelerates in the direction of the net force. The acceleration is directly proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to the mass
Define Newton’s third law
When object a exerts a force on object b, object b simultaneously exerts an oppositely directed force of equal magnitude on object a
