Newtons Law of Motion Flashcards
a change in an object’s position over time
motion
the object that appears to stay in place
reference point
the distance an object moves in a given amount of time
speed
a quantity that describes the speed of the object and its direction of travel.
velocity
the rate at which velocity changes
acceleration
the tendency of objects to resist any change in motion
inertia
newton’s first law of motion
law of inertia
can be formally stated as follows: The acceleration of an object as produced by a net force is directly proportional to the magnitude of the net force, in the same direction as the net force, and inversely proportional to the mass of the object.
newton’s second law
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
newton’s third law
An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
