Newton's Laws of Motion Flashcards
State Newton’s second law.
The rate of change of momentum of an object is directly proportional to the resultant force which acts on it, and in the same direction.
State Newton’s first law.
An object will remain stationary or at constant velocity unless an external force acts on it.
State Newton’s third law.
If an object exerts a force on another object, the other object exerts an equal but opposite force on the first object.
Define linear momentum.
The product of mass and velocity.
Is momentum a scalar or a vector quantity?
A vector quantity, because velocity is a component of it, which is also a vector quantity.
Define net force on a body.
The rate of change of momentum.
How does F=am relate to Newton’s second law?
It is a special case of Newton’s second law where mass remains constant.
Define impulse of a force.
The product of the average force acting on a body and the time for which it is acting. This equals change in momentum.
What is the area under a force-time graph equal to?
Impulse.
