Newton's Laws Flashcards
What is velocity?
Speed and direction
What is acceleration? And examples?
A change in an objects velocity eg. a pen knocked of a desk, a car turning a corner at a constant 10km/h, and ice skater gliding in a straight line.
What is inertia?
The tendency of objects to maintain their current state, either moving (in a straight line) or still.
When is an object balanced?
When forces are at the same strength in opposite directions and when forces combined effect does not make the object accelerate.
The amount of inertia and object has…..
increases with it’s mass
Scientists track an object moving through space. At first (a) it is travelling at a constant velocity. Then (b) its changes direction. Then, (c) it straightens up again, but (d) increases speed before (e) slowing down again.
Which of the following must be true?
1. At (a) the object was subject to an unbalanced force
2. At (b) the object was subject to an unbalanced force
3. A force must have been applied at (c) to make the object
’
s path straighten up again
4. A force was required at (d) to make the object increase speed
5. At (e) the object decreased speed due to inertia
At (b) the object was subject to an unbalanced force. A force was required at (d) to make the object increase speed.
What is a measurement of force, mass and acceleration?
Force= Newtons, Mass= Kg, Acceleration= m/s/s
The speed of an object in a given direction is it’s:
Velocity
What is Newton’s 2nd Law?
F=ma
What is Newton’s 1st Law?
Anything at rest will stay at rest unless moved by an unbalanced force, and anything moving will stay moving.
In physics, what is net force defined as?
The sum of all the different forces acting on the object
Does the mass of an object make any different to how it accelerates?
Yes, more mass=less acceleration and less mass=more acceleration.
What are some examples of contact forces?
Buoyancy, surface tension, air resistance, lift, thrust and friction.
What are some examples of non-contact forces?
Weight, electrostatic force, magnetic force.
What is the amount of gravity?
9.8 m/s/s
