Newton's Laws Flashcards
What is Newton’s Third Law?
Every action has an equal and opposite direction
Explain why a cannon recoils when it fires a cannonball
When a cannonball is launched, it moves forwards, causing the cannon to go backwards. This is because the cannon and the cannonball exert opposite and equal force.
What is Newton’s First Law?
An object’s motion will not change unless acted upon by an unbalanced force
What is inertia?
The tendency of objects to continue in their state of motion

What is acceleration + units?
rate of change in velocity
units is m/s2
acceleration formula
change in velocity/time
Object A goes from rest to 10s forwards in 2 seconds. Calculate the acceleration.
Change in velocity is final speed - initial speed.
10-0=10
10/2=5
5m/s2
Object B goes from 20s to rest in 5 seconds.
Calculate acceleration.
0-20=-20
-20/5=-4
-4m/s2 (or 4m/s2 of deceleration)
