Newton's law terms Flashcards
What is a force(F)?
Any kind of pull or push on an object in an attempt to change the object’s state of rest or motion.
Normal force(Fn)?
The force which a surface exerts on an object with which it is in contact, and which is perpendicular to the surface.
Frictional force(f)?
A contact force that opposes the motion of an object and which act parallel to the surface.
Static frictional force(Fs)?
The force that opposes the tendency of a stationary object relative to a surface.
Kinetic frictional force(Fk)?
The force that opposes the motion of a moving object relative to a surface with which it is in contact.
Newton’s First Law of Motion?
A body will remain in its state of rest or motion at constant velocity, unless a non-zero resultant/net force acts on it.
Inertia?
The property of a body that enables it to resist change in its state of motion.
Newton’s second law of motion?
When a resultant is applied to an object, the object will accelerate in the direction of the force. The acceleration is directly proportional to the force and inversely proportional to the mass of the object.
Newton’s third law of motion?
When one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body exerts a force of equal magnitude in the opposite direction on the first body.
Newton’s law of Universal Gravitation?
Every body in the universe attracts every other body with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centres.
Weight(Fg/W)?
The gravitational pull of the earth on an object on or near its surface.
Net or resultant force(Fnet)
The net or resultant force is the vector sum of all the forces acting on an object.
Equilibrium
Objects that are at rest or moving with constant velocity and have no net force acting on them
Weightlessness
An object is weightless if no contact force acts on it.
Apparent weight
The contact force exerted by a surface on an object
