Newton's 2nd Law Flashcards
Newton’s Second Law
State Newton’s 2nd law
If a net force acts on an object, the object will accelerate in the direction of the net force. The acceleration is directly proportional to the net force and indirectly proportional to the mass of the object.
Define acceleration
It is the rate of change of velocity of an object.
What is the formula for acceleration?
What is the formula for Newton’s 2nd Law?
Define a newton.
The force that accelerates a mass of 1kg at 1m.s-2 in the direction of the force.
When is acceleration directly proportional to net force and what would that graph look like?
- When the net force increases and acceleration increases, provided mass remains constant
- When the net force decreases and acceleration decreases, provided mass remains constant
When is acceleration inversely proportional to mass and what would that graph look like?
- When mass increases and acceleration decreases, provided force remains constant
- When the mass decreases and acceleration increases, provided force remains constant
How is the net force acting on an object calculated?
It is the vector sum of all the forces acting on the object.
For an object that is accelerating horizontally, which resultant force is used?
The resultant horizontal force
For an object that is accelerating vertically, which resultant force is used?
The resultant vertical force
For an object resting on a slope, which resultant force is used?
The resultant force is that which is parallel to the slope.
