Newton's 2nd Law Flashcards
what is the definition of a force
a push or a pull (measured in Newtons - N)
what are the two affects of a force
- change the motion of a body (change in speed/direction)
2. changes shape of body (squash/extend)
what are the two types of forces
- contact (sports)
2. Non Contact (field) e.g. gravity, magnetism
what are the 4 fundamental forces in nature
- weak nuclear force 2. electrogmagetic 3. gravity 4. strong nuclear force
What is the definition of the second law
a force applied to a rigid object will cause it to accelerate,
the larger the force the greater the acceleration, the greater the mass the smaller the acceleration, the motion is in the same line of action as the force applied
what is the formula for the 2nd law
f = m x a
What is net force
the sum of the forces acting on an object and its effect
what is a balanced force (3 points
when net force acting on object = 0
the object will not accelerate
it can stay at a constant speed or at rest
what is a unbalanced force (3 points
when the net force acting on the object is not 0
the object will acclerate
within in a structure/building it will cause failure
what is gravity
the attractive force that acts between masses (2 masses have attracting equal forces)
g— the bigger the mass =
the bigger the force
g— the closer the object are =
the bigger the force
What is weight
the force acting on a mass placed in a gravitational field measured in newtons , w=mx g
