Newton 2 Flashcards
- Objects remain in an unchanged state unless acted upon by an external cause
- An object that moves tends to move in a straight line
Descarte’s Two Laws of Nature
Objects move in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force
Inertia
non-inertial motion
Acceleration
a container within which all matter can be found but; exists independently of anything within it & not simply a relation between objects
Absolute Space
Not a material substance because it doesn’t act on anything.
Not a property substance because it doesn’t act on anything
Space
- Continuous & Infinitely Divisible
- Infinite in all directions
- It’s parts do not move
- A precondition for the existence of matter (matter must have extension)
- Empty between material bodies
- Eternal & Immutable
Nature of Absolute Space (Substantivalism)
determined by its change of place in absolute space, the rate of change is absolute too.
True Motion
undetectable by the senses, neither an object nor property of an object, no casual influence, abstract.
Critique of Absolute Space
matter moves due to contact with other matter, governed by mechanical laws
Descartes’ Belief about Motion
