- Gain consent to assess observations
- Grab equipment
- Sanitise hands
- Use pulse ox to measure O2 sats
- Use wrist to measure pulse and RR
- Use cuffs to measure BP
- Use thermometer to check temperature
- Sanitise hands afterwards

A

- Add all scores to calculate NEWS2

Fingerprick glucose demonstration:
A
- Wear gloves and PPE
- Grab relevant equipment - hand sanitiser, lancet, BG machine, BG strips
- Introduce yourself
- Confirm patient’s name and DOB
- Explain procedure - use small needle to insert into finger, drop of blood placed onto strip and placed into machine
- Sanitise patient’s finger
- Use lancet to prick patient’s finger
- Dispose in sharps box
- Place strip into the machine to turn it on
- Place blood onto strip
- Machine beeps, count down from 5
- Machine displaces BGL

For NEWS2, why is it important to wait a few seconds before recording O2 sats?

Initial O2 sats may not be accurate, few seconds = allows reading to stabilise

Why is automated BP unreliable with an irregular pulse?
A
Because automated machines are calibrated to sinus rhythms, not arrhythmias
