adversary
noun-an enemy or opponent
His political adversaries tried to prevent him from winning the nomination.
Our old cat seemed to consider the new kitten an adversary.
barricade
verb-to block (something) so that people or things cannot enter or leave
The police barricaded the crime scene.
circumference
noun- the length of a line that goes around something or that makes a circle or other round shape; the outer edge of a shape or area.
What is the circumference of the Earth at the equator?
The circle is 38 inches in circumference.
The fence marks the circumference of the field.
defiance
noun- a refusal to obey something or someone : the act of defying someone or something
Any defiance of the authoritarian regime would have dire consequences.
The troubled youth seems to have an ingrained defiance to authority of any sort.
emerge
verb- to become known or apparent; to become known or regarded as something; to rise or appear from a hidden or unknown place or condition; to come out into view
The facts emerged after a lengthy investigation.
Several possible candidates have emerged.

grueling
adjective- trying or taxing to the point of exhaustion
Running a marathon is grueling.
We have a grueling schedule this season so we have to work extra hard in practice to be ready.
illuminate
verb- to supply (something) with light; to shine light on (something); to make (something) clear and easier to understand
A part of the moon is illuminated by the sun.
A university study has illuminated the problem.
meander
verb- to have a lot of curves instead of going in a straight or direct line; to follow a winding course; to walk slowly without a specific goal, purpose, or direction
Please do not meander down the hall on your way to the office.
obscure
adjective-hard to see in the low light or hard to understand.
Ben specializes in collecting obscure sports memorabilia, so people pay quite a bit for what he is able to find.
potential
adjective- existing in possibility : capable of development into actuality
Doctors are excited about the new drug’s potential benefits.
replenish
verb- to fill or build up again
After a long run, I like to replenish my electrolytes by drinking gatorade.
scurry
verb- to move in a fluttery manner
The mice had to scurry out of the way to avoid being caught by the cat.
swarm
noun- a large group of something (usually insects) grouped together.
verb- to move about in a large group as if of one mind
The bees swarmed around the beehive.
The swarm of cicadas made a deafening noise.
translucent
adjective- not completely clear, but lets light through
When we remodeled the bathroom, we made sure the bathroom window was translucent instead of clear.
unsightly
adjective- not pleasant to look at
The basement of many people’s homes is unsightly.
versatile
adjective- able to do many different things
Smartphones are so versatile, it’s a wonder they are still called phones at all.
waft
verb- to move lightly through the air
My favorite part of fall is the smell of pies wafting through the air.
zeal
noun- a strong feeling of interest and enthusiasm that makes someone very eager or determined to do something
If you want to be a successful lawyer or doctor, you have to approach your education with zeal.
