Modifiers can play the roles of adjectives or adverbs.

A clause is a group of related words containing a subject and a verb.
A clause can be usefully distinguished from a phrase, which is a group of related words that does not contain a subject-verb relationship, such as “in the morning” or “running down the street” or “having grown used to this harassment.”

replaces a noun/ antecedent
dependent clause
a clause that has a subject and verb, but is not a complete thought. Also known as a subordinate clause- starts witha subordinate conjunction.
independent clause
contains a subject and verb, expresses a complete thought- can be a simple sentence, or connected to another independent clause to form a compound sentence, or a dependent clause to form a complex sentence.

independent clause + dependent clause using a subordinate conjunction
