Newborns Flashcards
Define Ductus Venosous
- allows oxygentated blood in the umbilical vein to bypass the liver and into inferior vena cava
Define foramen ovale
moves blood from RA-LA (bypass lungs in fetus)
Define Ducuts arteriosus
shunt between pulmonary artery and aorta - allows blood to bypass the lungs. Deoxygentated blood can enter systemic fetal circulation and return to placenta for re-oxygenation
Define Atrial Spetal Defect (ASD)
hole in the arterial septum wall that allows blood to travel from right to the left atria without reoxygenation (patent foremen ovale: when the foreman ovale does not close)
Define Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)
opening or hole in ventricular septal wall
Define patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)
when the ductus arteriosus does not close
Define pulmonary stenosis
narrowing of the pulmonary valve
Define coarctation of the aorta
part of the aorta is narrower than normal
Define Pyloric Stenosis
narrowing of the pyloris (bottom of the stomach, before the intestines)
Define esophageal atresia
the esophagus does not develop properly (upper portion is not attached to lower portion of stomach)
Define esophageal atresia with a tracheal fistula
an abnormal connection between esophagus and trachea
How old does a new born need to be to be considered premature
born prior to 37 weeks gestation
Why might a baby be born premature
lack of prenatal catre, substance misuse, multiple babies
What are some possible complications from a premature birth
hypothermia - lack of brown fat that develops between 26-30 weeks
Define cold stress in the context of newborn
Cold stress occurs when the babys metabolism increases to maintain core temperature
How to prevent cold stress in newborns`
- Provide warmth by skin-skin with warm blankets and baby hat
- increase ambient temperature
- limit cold air exposure
- If extremely preterm (before 28 weeks consider wrapping newborn in silver emergency blanket or plastic, along with warmed blanket
