Does not predit mortality.
1 min: evaluates conditions in labour and delivery
5 min: evaulates response to resusc
Causes newborn conjunctivitis
Day 1: chemical irritation
Days 2-7: N gon
Greater than 1 week: C. trachomatis
Greater than 3 weeks: herpes simplex
Transient polycythemia of newborn-mechanism
hypoxia at birth stimulates EPO, thus increase in RBCs. Splenomegaly normal in newborns
Transient tachypnoea-mech
Compression of rib cage during vaginal delivery removes excess fluid from lungs. If Cesarean-excess fluid therefore hypoxic.
If tachypnoea lasts >4 hours, consider sepsis
Sunconjunctival hemorrhage
Delivery-associated injury
Minute hemorrhages due to large increase in intrathoracic pressure as chest compressed through birth canal
