Newborn Flashcards
How long does the first period of reactivity last
up to 30 mins after birth
How is the infant reacting in the first stage of reactivity?
alert, with spontaneous startles, tremors, crying and head movements
Normal heart rate in first period of reactivity
160-180 bpm
what is happening in the period of decreased responsiveness
A brief phase where infant becomes quieter, has a lower HR/RR and shows minimal responsiveness
How long does the period of decreased responsiveness last
60-100 mins
Describe appearance & RR in the decreased phase
infant is pink with rapid, shallow, and unlabored respirations (up to 60 breaths/min)
How are the bowels in the decreased activity phase
bowels are present, with peristatic waves on a rounded abdomen
what is the second period of reactivity
a stage where newborn is alert/active and responsive to environment.
increase interest in voice, lights and touch.
describe the vitals in the second period of reactivity
tachypnea, tachycardia, and periods of apnea
when does the second phase of reactivity start and end
starts: 2-8 hrs after birth
ends: 10 mins-several hours
why does the newborn experience tachypnea, tachycardia, and apnea in second phase of reactivity
baby is trying to understand how breathing works
when does the baby have their first meconium
second phase of reactivity
what is the babinski reflex
when the bottom of the foot is stoked from heel upward. The big toe dorsiflexes and the other toes are stretched out
what is the rooting reflex
when the babys mouth is stroked
the baby will turn its head and open the mouth. this helps the baby find the food source when feeding
what is the moro reflex
can be triggered by a sudden loud noise or unexpected movement.
the infant will extend the arms with palms up and then move the arms back to the body
what is the tonic neck reflex
when infant is lying on its back, quickly turns head to one side. the leg and arm on the side will EXTEND, while the leg and arm on the opposite side will FLEX.
what is the gripping reflex
when something is placed in the infants hand, and the infant grasp the item very well
what is the blinking reflex
when a flash of light or puff of air goes in baby’s face, and they close their eyes
how does thermoregulation present a problem for newborns
they have a thin layer of subq fat that provides poor insulation
normal vitals for newborn
RR: 30-60
HR: 110-160
180- if crying
100- if sleeping
Temp: 97.7-99.5 F
signs of hypoglycemia in newborn
poor feeding, apnea, hypothermia, bluish/pale skin, lethargy, tremors/seizures
signs of respiratory distress
retractions, tachypnea, cyanosis, grunting, apneic periods
what is the average length of a newborn
48-53 cm
what is cephalohematoma
birth trauma (collection of blood)
does not cross suture lines but puts baby at risk for jaundice
