What is the climate of New Zealand?
Generally maritime, with the North Island a little warmer than south. Mountains in the center of the island protect the vineyards on the east side. Plentiful rainfall can be a problem.
What grapes is New Zealand most known for?
Tropical, herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir. Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah are also planted.
What are the primary regions on the North Island?
Auckland (and Waiheke Island), Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay (Gimblett Gravels), Wairarapa (Martinborough).
What are the primary regions on the South Island?
Marlborough, Nelson, Cantebury, Central Otago
What is Gisborne known for?
Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer
What is Hawke’s Bay known for?
Particularly Gimblett Gravels, with it’s heat retaining gravel soils, is known for red, Syrah and Bordeaux style blends
On the North Island, which region is known for Pinot Noir?
Martinborough, within the Wairarapa region.
What are the most well known regions on the South Island and what are they synonymous with?
Marlborough - Sauvignon Blanc
Central Otago - concentrated Pinot Noir
