new terms Flashcards
Phonology
combinations of phonemes (individual sounds) to produce meaningful words
Morphology:
study of word structure, including alterations that change word meaning such as the word dog and add an it becomes dogs and we all know that means more than one. [The morpheme is the smallest grammatical unit of meaning in a language]
Syntax:
[rules governing the form or structure of a sentence and relationships between words] word order, i.e. I eat pizza [In english, we use subject + verb + object]
Semantics
meaning parameter of language, referential is the meaning of individual words: car- you get a mental image. Relational meaning: combinations of references in a message; meaning of the message is the sum of the total parts. This is important in the BI population or when communicating with non English speakers. If we say Julie is going to throw a party, we mean she is hosting a party.
Pragmatics:
: rules for governing what we say and how we say it. Rules for social language say inappropriate or unrelated things during conversations, tell stories in a disorganized way [also includes things like turn taking, eye contact, topic maintenance, conversational repair when a breakdown has occurred] have little variety in language use. People with BI need help with this as do older adults with dementia.
[The 5 parameters of language fall into three categories:
Form: Phonology, Morphology, Syntax
Content: Semantics
Use: Pragmatics]
Articulation:
how you pronounce words
Voice:
nasal, deep high [includes vocal quality such as harsh, breathy, or strained in voice disorders & problems occur at the velum (which closes off your nasal cavity) or at the vocal folds]
Fluency:
smoothness versus telegraphic [stuttering]
If a baby drools, often has poor articulation (those muscles not yet developed)
Echolalia:
4-9 mos- repeat sounds heard
Phonetic drift:
4-9 mos- concentrate on producing sounds they hear from the spoken word (6 months) not TV
Vocable:
10-12 mos-specific sound patterns specific for that child- word a child makes up for something: baba for bottle, grandma: mongo
