New Rights views on education. (part of the topic of the consensus theories of education) Flashcards
What do Marxists think / believe about Functionalists (Durkheim and Parsons) view on role allocation ?
Functionalists see this as being meritocratic whereas Marxists believe that meritocracy is nothing but an ideology , this is called the myth of meritocracy. They argue that the education system reproduces class inequalities.
What did Davis and Moore (functionalists) believe that the education system facilitated ?
That education facilitates meritocracy.
What did Davis and Moore argue ?
They argued that for society to function there had to be a system of unequal rewards. This is the ability to access high rewards that encourages individuals to put in more effort. ( social stratification is essential for society to function correctly )
Why does meritocracy work according to Davis and Moore ?
Because of competition.
What do Marxists criticise about Davis and Moore’s views ?
That social stratification (your ranking in society based on wealth, education, background) causes the education system to fail to grade people by ability or effort and instead depends on wealth which education reinforces.
What views are similar to New Rights and how ?
Functionalists , as they both believe that the education system should be run on meritocracy, that the education system should socialise pupils into believing shared values.
What do the New Right believe the education state does ?
it fails to prepare children for the world and for the workplace as the policies that were created to promote mixed ability (involving students with mixed abilities so that everybody has a fair chance at education) have not been created.
What does education need to do according to the New Right ?
It needs to become more competitive within and between schools. They believe that there should be more about winning and losing instead of collaboration and fairness.
What do the New Right believe to be the types of values that the education system should encourage ?
Shared values (hard work, teamwork)
What do the New Right believe the education system needs to be sorted into to make it more equal / fair ?
A parentocracy , which then allows for the value consensus to be set by parents and align to their beliefs and values rather than politicians who are often far from the mainstream.
What is a problem with excessive competition within / between schools ?
It means that the losers are children and despite these teaching them important life lessons , it is also a problem as it can cause children to have a lack of motivation and low self esteem of themselves that they aren’t succeeding like others.
What do the New Right believe about rewards ?
they believe that everybody should push and work hard to get the rewards and that the spur of failure is important.
