What do New right believe?
- see traditional nuclear traditional families as serving the basic functions of society
-concerned about the state of the family in todays society
e.g lone parent families
consequences of decline in nuclear families
- dependency on welfare benefits from the welfare state
- new right say family should be self sufficient
- decline in socialisation which could lead to crime as they aren’t learning norms + values
- see lone parent families as a problem as there is no role model to assert authority
Norman Dennis and George erdos
argues that children without fathers are affected
- the effects are substantial for boys as they grow up without a male role model and lack primary socialisation
-will become a generational cycle
Charles murray
-argues that welfare programs actually hurt society as a whole
-creates dependency and could encourage lone pregnancy
evaluation of the new right views of the family
-blaming the victim - blame the poor for their own poverty rather than seeking other explanations for why ppl find themselves in need of welfare
- value judgements - ignore the oppression of women and overlook the strength it takes to raise a family alone
