New Right - ethnicity Flashcards
Thiel research
Conducted ethnographic study on a London building site
- Participant observation used for one year
Working class culture was observed alongside ethnicity
- Ethnic hierarchy existed in labour force
Sub-contractors employed men from their own community and ethnicity and their rarely employed men from outside of their community
- Carpenters = Indian ethnicity
- Labourers = Irish ethnicity
- Plasterers = Seychelles
- Managers = White British
Migrant workers from outside of these ethnic groups were rarely employed even if they could work hard for less pay
If migrant workers employed they were first to be fired if demand for work reduced (racism amongst different ethnic groups)
Affected employment opportunities and economic power of ethnic groups in the labour market
