Host Immigration Model
Patterson
Britain presented as stable, homogenous, orderly society with high degree of consesus over N&V
Equilibrium disrupted by immigrant arrival in 1950s
because they had diff N&Vs
Resulted in clash between immigrants and host community
Patterson says clashes due to host community unsure how to react towards immigrants
Three causes of inequality
Host culture’s fear of cultural differences
Host culture’s resentment of having to compete with immigrants for jobs & housing
Failure of immigrants to completely integrate
What’s Patterson saying
Patterson implied immigrants who continued to practice their own culture would experience hostility
But continued to be optimistic that immigrants would shed old ethnic values and embrace host community values fully
What are the 3 stages before complete assimilation
Accomodation
Integration
Assimilation
What is accommodation (the first stage)
Minimal adaptation and acceptance of mainstream culture
What is integration (the second stage)
Hosts and immigrants socialise outside of work
What is assimilation (the third stage)
Complete acceptance and adaptation, could lead to physical amalgamation: interbreeding between races
Evaluation of the host immigration model
Ignores significant role of capitalism, divisions in race maintain capitalism
Assimilation is idealistic and impossible to achieve under capitalism
