Features of new media

A

digitality -ability to use computers, not the phyiscal item
interactivity - engage with it, participatory culture - able to change programmes etc
hypertextuality - we can search, interact and customise media doe our own use, able to pause/ record
dispersal - spread out across many peoples control - citizen journalism
virtuality -can create an imaginary identity, not real
+ allows diversity and more opinions
-bias and distorts view, algorithm

who uses new media?

A

in 2014 84% had access to the internet, Helsper suggested it is the young, healthy and well educated people with higher incomes who were more likely to be frequent internet users, social class = more likely to be used by middle class, digital underclass - can access skill and lack confidence, lockdown,,, age - younger age group feels more confident in using new media, ofcom found that young people have greater access and confidence as media users. boyle = younger people grew up with the label as they have grew up with it i.e. youtube kids ,,, gender differences = females are more likely to read kindles, make calls and develop social skills, boys are more likely to play games, relax , have positive attitudes.,,, location = greater divide between HIC and LIC, HIC use new media more, digital underclass.

how does new media affect old media?

A

decline in traditional media i.e. newspapers, needed to intergrate i.e. the sun has a tiktok account, made media more accesible. Bivens - changes to new media has impact traditional media - shifts on traditional news flow cycles - how quickly they need to be produced , research then publish, create citizen journalism, needs to be quicker, heightened accountability - responsible, evolving news values - gossip infotainment etc. churnalism.

what is the cultural optimist view on new media?

A

allows more choice and greater democracy - emphasise the positivity of creating a global popular culture. More informed consumers and wider choice - more than 4 channels, pick your seat when watching, see others views, wider market. greater democracy - ability to find and research things easier,voice opinion through citizen journalism. More access- freedom of infomation act- access to any infomation, world becomes a global village, more interconnected i.e. pens pals across world, tiktok - travel videos, social life and interaction enhanced , can chat online etc

what is the cultural pessimist view of new media?

A

problem s with validity - doesnt show real life i.e. kardashians life, overload infomation as a distraction, cultural and media imperialism - owned by four media corps, make a profit by selling advertisement i.e. facebook,, threat to democracy, reinforce elite power, easier to manipulate audience. Limited consumer choice = creates a narrow homogenous popular culture, transmits dominant ideology, distracts people from bigger picture, surveillance = leads to increased state of surveillance, undermines relationships
