Q

what is media imperialism?

A

theory that suggests that smaller countries are losing their identity due to the dominance of media from larger nations. It can be equated to small community shops closing down due to large superstores moving in, taking over, and having a monopoly. As the larger media corporations begin to take over, smaller media companies are either being forced out or swallowed up

Q

What is the postmodern view on media?

A

seen in a similar way to pluralists, globalisation has provided the global population with more choice about lifestyle etc. Baudrillard argues we live in a media saturated society, media images dominate and distort our perception of the world around us, creates a hyperreality - seen as reality i.e. computer games, simulacra - appear to represent whats real but dont ex. disney land, eval : assumes people approach media without their own experiences, can ignore it!!
