to be treated with respect and admiration, apart from everyday life found in special places preserved i.e. van gogh painting vs mass produced painting

distinction between the two is merging, was high culture now part of popular culture. classical music gaining wide audience,
Evaluate popular culture:
widens diversity and choice,form of social control , dumbs down to maintain power of dominant class, creates profit.
global popular culture developed, undermined local culture, making them more alike, cultural homogenisation, UK and USA
what is media imperialism?
theory that suggests that smaller countries are losing their identity due to the dominance of media from larger nations. It can be equated to small community shops closing down due to large superstores moving in, taking over, and having a monopoly. As the larger media corporations begin to take over, smaller media companies are either being forced out or swallowed up
what does media imperialism result in?
results in the homogenisation of cultures, where local traditions and identities are overshadowed by the dominant culture

What do the pluralist approach believe about popular culture?
no such thing as popular or mass culture, wide variety of choice, tomlinson suggests that people pick and mix daily, hybrid culture involves tv being adapted to the needs of society, brand is same but adapt plan
What do the critical approach believe about globalisation?
globalisation is a great advantage to media owners - gain massive profit from advertising, infotainment is accompanied by a global feel good factor, diverts attention away from other topics, output is controlled by lords of the global village.

What is the postmodern view on media?
seen in a similar way to pluralists, globalisation has provided the global population with more choice about lifestyle etc. Baudrillard argues we live in a media saturated society, media images dominate and distort our perception of the world around us, creates a hyperreality - seen as reality i.e. computer games, simulacra - appear to represent whats real but dont ex. disney land, eval : assumes people approach media without their own experiences, can ignore it!!
