New materials (nanoparticles) Flashcards
What 2 groups of materials do i need to know about?
Smart materials.
Nanoparticles.
Why do smart materials behave differently?
Depend on conditions.
Eg temp.
What is a good example of a smart material?
Nitinol - A shape memory alloy.
What is Nitinol?
Metal alloy.
Half nickel, half titanium.
What can you do to Nitinol?
Bend and twist it like rubber when cool.
What happens when you heat nitinol?
Heat it above a certain temp and it will go back to its ‘remembered shape’.
What is Nitinol also used for?
Glasses frames.
Dental braces.
Nanoparticles are really really what?
Tiny.
How big are nanoparticles?
1-100 nanometres across.
How many atoms does a nanoparticle contain?
Roughly a few hundred.
What do nanoparticles contain?
Fullerenes.
What are fullerenes?
Molecules of carbon.
Shaped like hollow balls.
What are the carbon atoms arranged like?
Hexagonal rings.
Different fullerenes contain what?
Different numbers of carbon atoms.
A nanoparticle has very different properties from what?
Bulk chemical that it’s made from.
