new material/material/ timber Flashcards
what is an alloy
it is a mixture of two or more metals,
brass is an alloy of two metals: copper and zinc.
what is a chipboard
is a man-made sheet material, made from small
chips
of timber glued together to produce a dense
sheet
what is metallic foam
“metallic foam” is any kind of metallic material which contains voids, e.g aluminium foam or nickel foam
what are properties of graphene
Graphene: the world’s first 2D material.
It is ultra-light yet immensely tough.
It is 200 times stronger than steel, but it is incredibly flexible.
It is the thinnest material possible as well as being transparent.
It is a superb conductor and can act as a perfect barrier - not even helium can pass through it.
what are uses of graphene
Flexible screens, solar cells, lighter aircraft, better batteries, protective coatings, filtration to make sea water drinkable.
what is titanium
Titanium is a silver colour, low density, and high strength metal. Titanium is resistant to corrosion in sea water and chlorine.
what are Piezoelectric materials
Piezoelectric materials are materials that produce a voltage when stress is applied
what are Thermochromic materials and where are they used
Thermochromic materials change colour as the temperature changes. These are used on contact thermometers made from plastic strips and test strips on the side of batteries (where the heat comes from a resistor under the thermochromic film). They are also used as food packaging materials that show you when the product they contain is cooked to the right temperature.
what is Polymorph
Polymorph is a material that can change shape as the temperature changes.
what is HYDROCHROMIC INK
HYDROCHROMIC INK CHANGES COLOUR WHEN EXPOSED TO WATER
what is a ferrous material
a metal which contains iron
what is a softwood
Softwood is wood derived from trees, typically conifers, characterized by needle-like or scale-like leaves. ha
